The Wolfman’s Rick Baker talks about his work on the film and his easy transition from traditional to digital sculpting.

“It was like love at first sight. [ZBrush] was so much more like real-world sculpting but on a computer … I call it no fear sculpting and it freed me up design wise.”

  1. I love it when highly talented artists talk about software like another “tool in the toolkit”. There are no dinosaurs in this industry. Only people with talent, skill and an artist’s eye for form. The “old school” skills still apply. One of the arguments I had with one of my friends was when the computer was first being used for art and design (the first Macintosh, I believe). He said “aren’t you worried that some programmer will create software that will take your place?” As he was a writer, my response was “no, are you afraid of Microsoft Word?” 25 years later, the subject never came up again. 🙂

  2. Really great to see and hear Monstermaker… so love looking at his fabulous sculpts here on the boards. Just wish the video was on a better player, one with rewind controls and which streamed better.

  3. As always, I have been inspired by Rick Baker since I was a teenager back in the mid to late seventies. I copied his “Incredible Melting Man” make up for a Halloween costume when I was sixteen. I tried to watch the video interview with Mr. Baker, but it didn’t stream very well at all, and then it crashed my computer. I have a very fast PC, so it definitely isn’t my computer. I didn’t get tot finish the interview and will not try again as I do not trust the source code.
Otherwise, I am a huge fan of Mr. Baker and a huge fan of ZBrush of which I am only just starting to study and learn how to use. When I scrape together the money, I will purchase the full version immediately. In the meantime, I am studying the thirty day trial version and am blown away!

  8. So glad to get this news, I’m not surprised…when two things gathered “Zbrush and great artist” we’re sure something amazing will get.
    Congratulations.!!
