After years of struggling with the handicap of having tiny arms, he feels reinvigorated upon\u00a0discovering Audi\u2019s piloted driving which allows him to overcome the fact that he can\u2019t reach the steering wheel. We reached out to Daniel Jahnel, Joint Head of 3D at <a href=\"https:\/\/sehsucht.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sehsucht<\/a> in Hamburg, the VFX house that handled the CG for the ad, to tell us about the project.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I2j2-DqcPfM\" width=\"560\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The concept, along with a working script, was brought to Sehsucht by director <a href=\"http:\/\/stinkfilms.com\/talent\/stephan-wever\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephan Wever<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/stinkfilms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stink Films<\/a>. The team was excited by the idea, as most of us in the CG world have a soft spot for anything dinosaur-related since having our minds blown by Jurassic Park. Part of the idea was to incorporate short scenes with limited animation to convey the \u201cshort arms\u201d joke quickly and subtly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pixologic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Comp2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14567\" src=\"http:\/\/pixologic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Comp2-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"Comp2\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wever\u2019s experience with VFX-heavy production was an asset during planning since many considerations need to be made when filming content that is to have CG elements added later. Communication with the VFX team during principal photography is essential.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s great to work with a director who understands how important it is to work together with VFX when it comes to planning<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Exterior portions of the ad were shot over a two day period in Berlin, the T-Rex home interior in Potsdam. Background plates were shot using actor David Masterson, also the voice of T-Rex, as reference. A foam rubber T-Rex head was also used to account for the larger-than-human head size in order to properly frame each shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pixologic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HDRI-Comp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14585\" src=\"http:\/\/pixologic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HDRI-Comp-1200x253.jpg\" alt=\"HDRI Comp\" width=\"1200\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After these, empty plates were shot in order\u00a0to match move\u00a0which allowed for finally adding the CG T-Rex. All HDRI\u2019s for lighting of the final model were shot on location to best match the natural look of each space.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/J3BlqSK3BALRu\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulfgieseler.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ulf Gieseler<\/a> was the ZBrush sculptor on the project. He used <a href=\"http:\/\/pixologic.com\/zbrush\/features\/zbrush4r2\/dynamesh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dynamesh<\/a> to help sculpt which he found useful for working quickly and independent from fixed topology.
